Let’s Play: Glory of Heracles III Part 29

I keep mentioning this game in my articles and have used several sample movie scenes of it as well. But one really needs to have experienced the game in full to appreciate its quality. If you haven’t been spoiled yet (or even if you have), watch this series of youtube videos first before you read any of the related articles. I’m planning a weekly release schedule.

If you haven’t seen it yet, start with part 1. Or better yet, play it yourself. There is a fan translation patch available at romhacking.net which I used for this Let’s Play.

Our heroes take up Triton’s invitation and stop by Poseidon’s place. Then they go to paradise.

Now this episode has several note worthy plot points which are relevant for Nojima’s later body of work:

1. The circulation of the water currents of the sea is linked to Gaia’s well being. This clearly is the conceptual root for the life stream in Final Fantasy VII.

2. The polisher who can turn rusty equipment into usable and sometimes even rare equipment with special stats is a mainstay in the Glory of Heracles series. Nojima also returned to this notion of polishing weapons to make them usable again in Final Fantasy X-2.5. In chapter 18, on pages 160-161 Tidus and Yuna find an ancient weapon storage after being stranded on an island without any of their belongings. Tidus polishes some of the rusty weapons so they will have some way to defend themselves when the need arises. But he also acknowledges that the he might have polished them too much, since the rust didn’t just cover the surface but reached into the core of the weapon.

3. Steia remembers her real name. Nojima reused this name at least two times, in 2003 for his company name when he went independent as a freelance writer. And in 2006 for the female lead character in Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
